    Leptospirosis: How Vaccinations Protect Us

Given the most recent human leptospirosis cases in the Bronx, we thought it best to talk to you about how vaccinations protect all of us and why they are so important.

Our clients frequently ask us, “Are these vaccinations necessary” and our answer is a resounding “YES!”. Vaccinations are administered to increase immunity to a particular disease. They are the best form of prevention because they help to protect you and your pet against transmittable disease.

Take for example the most recent outbreak of human leptospirosis in the Bronx, a zoonotic, multi-organ disease that affects both humans and animals. It is caused by the corkscrew-like bacteria shed in the urine of infected animals and is commonly transmitted by mammals such as rodents, raccoons, foxes, and coyotes through stagnant water reservoirs and standing puddles. Dogs and humans can become infected through contact with any soil, food, or water that has been contaminated with the urine of an infected animal.

While leptospirosis is usually less common amongst humans than animals, the side effects are extremely severe and if not caught in time, can be fatal. This particular outbreak was reported in three humans whose exposure occurred in the Bronx. All three showed signs of acute renal and hepatic failure, two developed into pulmonary hemorrhaging and one proved to be fatal.

The reality is that vaccination against this disease and many others is the safest, cheapest, and most effective form of prevention- that is why leptospirosis is part of our vaccine protocol. Vaccinations such as this ensure both you and your pet a healthier and longer life.   So get educated and get vaccinated today by calling us at (914) 941-4904 to schedule your pet’s vaccination appointment. After all, a healthy pet is a happy pet!
